League Guidelines

The Stonetree Bouldering League is all about bringing climbers of all ages and abilities together in friendly competition. Whether you’re new to Stonetree or a seasoned regular, this is your chance to connect, climb regularly, and cheer each other on. Join us as we build community, foster improvement, and have a blast climbing throughout the gym! New this year - individual Handicaps. Read on for more information.

Details:

  • Registration Open: January 6th - sign up online

  • Cost: $10 per person

  • Opening Night: January 15th

  • Closing Night: February 26th

  • Teams of 4 - Create your own team of 4, Sign up with a friend or partner, or as an Individual (Free Agent) and we will get you a team

  • Teams are encouraged to sign up with varying ability levels (sign up in your V-grade!) handicaps will exist to even out the teams. That means a team of V0 climbers has a chance to win! And a team of V7+ climbers will get heavily handicapped.

  • Sandbaggers - if you sign up in a v-grade and climb WAY higher than you signed up, you will get double handicapped (totally up to Judges discretion)

  • Best 4 weeks of scores of 6 weeks (so if you miss a week, that’s okay)

  • Score on 3 climbs per week, climbs must be completed on the day that you submit your score card. In other words, you can’t say “oh I climbed that route on Monday, but I’m writing it down for today, Tuesday to submit”… nope.

Scoring:

  • Climbs are assigned names & point values according to their difficulty across the gym

  • Climbs have unique names but NOT necessarily unique point values

  • Each climber records their top 3 scores for the week, along with attempts

  • Weekly score cards are available on Wednesdays

  • Score cards live behind the desk, you’re responsible for putting them back each week.

  • Scores are due Tuesday at closing time

  • Wednesday we will try to post scores online - details TBD

There are non-sending ways to add points to your score

In Stonetree fashion, you don’t just win points for climbing hard! Your team can also earn points for:

  • The most attempts for the week = “Most Tries”

  • If you film, send, post & tag one of your team member’s sends (not your own)
on social media = “Social Post”

  • If you climb as a FULL team of 4 for the night = “Team Points”

  • “Kudos Points” = your team can nominate another team for being supportive and helpful

  • And as always - points for climbing in costume as a team = “Costume Points”

Bouldering League HANDICAPS

New this year: We’re introducing a handicap system to level the playing field for all climbers! The goal is to allow beginners to compete alongside V10 crushers, giving everyone the same opportunity to come out on top. Each climber’s handicap is based on their registered category.

How it works: With an accurate handicap, a climber’s score should total 20 points each week. For each V-grade increase, the handicap increases by 9.

  • Example 1: A V3 climber’s handicap is -34.
-V3 climbs are awarded 17, 18, or 19 points, with an average of 18.
-Over three climbs, this totals 54 points. Subtracting the handicap of -34 results in a perfect score of 20.

  • Example 2: A V4 climber’s handicap is -43.
-V4 climbs are awarded 20, 21, or 22 points, with an average of 21.
-Over three climbs, this totals 63 points. Subtracting the handicap of -43 results in a perfect score of 20.

On a high-gravity day, you may score as few as 15 or 16 points. On a low-gravity day, you could score as many as 25 or 26 points. If your scores consistently fall well above or below your registered grade, a judge may adjust your handicap. Sandbaggers will be punished severely.
